The other day I was mourning the end of summer, but as I scrolled through my Instagram (i.e. my photo album of life) I was reminded of what an incredible and jam-packed summer of adventures it was.

When I was a kid, my sister and I always kept journals of our summer adventures and family vacations. It is hilarious to go back and read the journals now. Apparently, my sister was punished one year in PEI for losing a card game of crazy 8s and forced to wash all the dishes. No one else seems to remember this.

One of the reasons I enjoy blogging is because it is a great online time capsule or journal of memories and things that I have done. I love to look back and recall hilarious, fun, proud, terrifying, and exciting moments in my life.

Today I have rounded up some of my favourite adventures from summer 2016 on the wild west coast and beyond.

May 2016

Ran my first marathon: BMO Vancouver on May 1, 2016. Little did I know what an impactful experience it would be and how much I would learn during training.

Saw my first Whitecaps soccer game

Spent 3 days in Kelowna: drinking wine, hiking, eating and exploring (and a little bit of working)

Went on a family cruise to Alaska. Highlights included: stopping in Sitka and doing a 20 km hike, cruising in Glacier Bay National Park, exploring Juneau and hiking Mendenhall Glacier and Mount Roberts, and spending our last day in Ketchikan with whale-sightings galore.  

Hiked the Sea to Sky Summit trail in Squamish

Celebrated the 6th annual Papergirl YVR exhibition opening at the Anvil Centre in New Westminster

Attempted the Whole30 eating challenge: 30 days of no gluten, dairy, legumes, beans, sugar, and grains

June 2016

Signed up for marathon no. 2: Portland Marathon and recommenced marathon training

Launched my new blog Wild Coast Tales

My friend Shawn came to visit and we toured the city: gardens at Queen Elizabeth Park, dinner at East is East, hiking Capilano Canyon to Ambleside Beach, visiting Cleveland Dam

Ran the Seek the Peak challenge with team Peanut Butter and Jelly Legs: relay trail race from Ambleside Beach to peak of Grouse Mountain

Hiked the Grouse Grind to celebrate Ford Canada’s kale-gate

Helped lead the 6th annual Papergirl YVR rideout: distributing gifts of art to random strangers by bicycle on the streets of New Westminster

Hiked Lynn Headwaters Regional Park and Rice Lake

July 2016

Hiked to the top of Hollyburn Mountain to celebrate Canada Day and found snow, rain and fog

Went on a floatplane for the first time 

Spent 7 jam-packed hours in Victoria eating, exploring and walking around the city

Went to a goji berry farm and picked berries fresh off the bush

Hiked Garibaldi Lake, now one of my favourite hike’s in BC

Ran the 5 Peaks Trail Race at Cypress Mountain and learned 12 km is not a short distance when you’re running on the trails

Finally had dinner at the gourmet vegetarian restaurant The Acorn

Took a cooking class at The Dirty Apron: fitness, flavour, and food 

Attempted to go whale watching with my friend Karen (after several failed attempts) only to leave the harbour and have our boat break down

August 2016

Spent the August long weekend on beautiful Salt Spring Island: eating of course, running, hiking and exploring almost every inch of that island

Ran to new places with my marathon clinic group like the Olympic Oval in Richmond

Did yoga on the beach at sunset with my friends Nikki and Luke

Ran my first MEC 10 km trail in North Vancouver and finished 10th overall female

Tried out the Eat2Run 5 day kickstart cleanse 

Ran my highest mileage week ever (topping out at 52.5 miles/85 km)

Ate plenty of delicious food including: pie at Tartine Bread & Pie, charcuterie boards galore, brunch at Forage, and coffee (always coffee)

Spent 7 glorious day on Prince Edward Island: eating our way through the island, finding the best beaches and running routes, and getting up to a few more adventures (like witnessing a crazy storm)

Explored new parks in Burnaby: Confederation Park and Central Park

Did a long run in Seymour Demonstration Forest on the paved path through forest and mountains

  • While I love life on the west coast, it's never easy living on the other side of the country from many friends and family. Grateful for trips home, no matter how long or short (this weekend!) they may be. Back to YVR ✈️

  • Had some of the best vegan food ever at @plantatoronto tonight! I've often been left disappointed (and hungry 😅) by new plant based eateries but this totally exceeded expectations. Loved all the dishes we tried from the cheesy queso dip (pictured here) to the peanut butter chocolate "terrarium" for dessert.
  • Springtime in Victoria #flashbackfriday meanwhile in Toronto... ❄️🌧☀️
  • Last night's surprisingly purple sunset, a welcome sight after a day of rain #tbt
